Mika Sperling is the very first award winner. The German Photographic Association (DGPh) is presenting the EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD for the first time this year. The sponsorship prize of the DGPhs Art, Market & Law section is supported by the WhiteWall photo lab. The award ceremony will take place at Paris Photo in November 2024 at the Leica Gallery Paris.

The aim of the EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD is to promote up-and-coming photographic artists. The winner of the first EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD is the artist Mika Sperling, nominated by Jule Schaffer. Honorable mentions go to Elliott Kreyenberg, nominated by Candice M. Hamelin, and Marco Dirr, nominated by Prof. Tamara Grcic.

„Uncover II“ ist der zweite Teil einer Gruppenschau zum Thema „Macht- und Gewaltstrukturen und sexualisierte Gewalt“. Der erste war im Westwerk zu sehen. Die ehemalige Stipendiatin des Sootbörn, Suse Itzel, geht zusammen mit Jenny Bewer, Simone Karl, Jay Ritchie und
Mika Sperling das allgegenwärtige, doch meist vertuschte Thema an. Installationen, Fotografien und Texte zeigen, wie sich solche Erfahrungen in den Körper einschreiben. „Die künstlerischen Arbeiten in ‚Uncover‘ sind eine Aufforderung an uns alle“, sagt Itzel. „Wir sollten versuchen, unsere Traumata nicht schweigend und mit Scham überladen an eine nächste Generation weiterzugeben.“

“Uncover II” is the second part of a group exhibition addressing power structures, violence, and sexualized violence. The first installment was shown at Westwerk. Former Sootbörn fellow Suse Itzel approaches this pervasive yet often concealed topic together with Jenny Bewer, Simone Karl, Jay Ritchie, and Mika Sperling. Installations, photographs, and texts reveal how such experiences become inscribed in the body. “The artistic works in ‘Uncover’ are a call to all of us,” says Itzel. “We should try not to pass our traumas on to the next generation in silence and burdened with shame.”

Daylight Project presents the video art screening programme:
Making the Invisible Visible, curated by Maria Kapajeva. It brings together works by artists and filmmakers from different countries who address historical and contemporary issues which remain unseen, yet demand to be heard and recognised. The programme explores how difficult issues, ranging from major historical events to personal trauma, can be approached in different ways, and how art empowers those who have felt invisible and excluded.
The screening includes works by Kadri Nikopensius, Asel Kadrykhanova, Arle Saar, Ada Ada Ada, and Maria Kapajeva, alongside a live online performance by Mika Sperling. The event is organized in cooperation with Feministeerium as part of Women’s Week 2026 @naistenadal. In this intimate investigation, Mika Sperling breaks a family and societal taboo. With vulnerability and resilience, she confronts her trauma through three visual narratives. First, a photographed walk along the path between her childhood home and that of her abusive grandfather; then, a family album in which the portraits of the aggressor have been meticulously cut out; and finally, the script of a conversation that will never take place between the deceased perpetrator and the woman who was once his granddaughter—now a mother—seeking answers.
Three series of pieces of evidence, punctuated by feverish handwritten notes, immerse us in the heart of her healing process. Through this formal investigation, Mika Sperling raises the question of repair through the artistic object.

Trois séries de pièces à conviction, ponctuée de notes manuscrites fiévreuses, nous immergent au cœur de son processus de guérison. Conceived and hosted by The Eyes team in collaboration with Paris Photo, the Artist Talks by The Eyes put into perspective the artist’s relationship with the book in his or her artistic practice, approach and editorial production. Mika was in conversation with Federica Chiocchetti who is a curator, writer and editor.
In an intimate and friendly atmosphere, each artist shares with the public his or her experience around his or her most recent publication in an imposed format of 15 minutes followed by a Q&A with the public. In total, 36 artists selected by The Eyes participate in this unique programme presented in French or English.
The Artist Talks by The Eyes are moderated by Pascale Obolo (independent curator, Director of the African Art Book Fair), Véronique Prugnaud (Director of The Eyes) and Marc Feustel (author and independent curator).

Jenny Bewer, Suse Itzel, Simone Karl, Jay Ritchie und Mika Sperling setzen sich in ihrer Ausstellungsreihe „Uncover“ mit dem Themenkomplex von Trauma und (geschlechterspezifischer) Gewalt auseinander. Die Ausstellung „Uncover I“ fand vom 29.06. bis 08.07.2023 im Westwerk statt.
Die Gewalt, die in beiden Ausstellungen thematisiert wird, wurde von den Künstler*innen entweder am eigenen Körper erfahren und/oder über einen intensiven, künstlerischen Prozess nachempfunden. Ihre Arbeiten stellen Fragen: Wie erinnern wir – auch als Gesellschaft – uns an diese Themen? Welche Spuren bleiben nach Gewalt und sexuellem Missbrauch auf Körper und Seele zurück? Welche künstlerische(n) Sprache(n) sind denkbar? Wie werden Zustände nachvollziehbar, die nur schwer vermittelbar sind? In beiden Ausstellungsräumen reagieren unterschiedliche Arbeiten aufeinander: Fotografien treffen auf performative Video-Arbeiten, eine Rauminstallation trifft auf literarischen Text, Stoff trifft auf Stacheln, Wörter treffen auf Körper.
Die gezeigten Arbeiten bezeugen jedoch nicht nur das Verbrechen oder zeigen das Trauma als eine bleibende Wunde, sondern lassen in der Verletzlichkeit auch Widerstand und Stärke, ja, sogar Möglichkeiten von persönlicher Heilung und gesellschaftlicher Veränderung, von Empowerment und Gemeinschaft aufscheinen. 
Jenny Bewer, Suse Itzel, Simone Karl, Jay Ritchie und Mika Sperling haben verschiedene künstlerische Sprachen gefunden und möchten damit zu einer dauerhaften Sichtbarkeit beitragen, damit die Aufmerksamkeit für diese Themen nicht abreißt. Die Bewältigung von Traumata ist ein Weg, der auch aktiv gegangen werden kann – aber nur dann, wenn diesem Unterfangen auch von gesellschaftlicher Seite ausreichend Ressourcen zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Zugleich bleibt es immer ein Weg, dessen Anfang den betroffenen Personen mit Gewalt aufgezwungen worden ist.
Ein Vortrag und eine Lesung werden die Ausstellung im Künstlerhaus Sootbörn ergänzen. Der Vortrag von Christina Clemm wird die Thematiken aus einer juristischen Perspektive beleuchten.
Suse Itzel und die Kölner Autorin Jennifer de Negri setzen sich in ihren literarischen Texten mit Gerichtsprozessen auseinander. 
Beide Ausstellungen hoffen darauf, dass über das Medium der Kunst auch cis männlich gelesene Personen erreicht werden, die sich zwar für Kunst interessieren, sich zuvor aber noch nicht oder noch kaum mit den hier angerissen Themen auseinandergesetzt haben. Denn patriarchale Gewaltstrukturen können letztendlich nur durchbrochen werden, wenn auch cis männlich gelesene Personen aktiv daran mitarbeiten. Die künstlerischen Arbeiten in „Uncover“ sind – nicht zuletzt –  eine Aufforderung an uns alle: Wir sollten versuchen unsere Traumata nicht schweigend an eine nächste Generation weiterzugeben. Hinsehen und zuhören sind dabei eine Vorraussetzung. 
Gefördert werden „Uncover I“ und „Uncover II“ durch die Claussen-Simon-Stiftung, die Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg und die Poolhaus-Blankenese-Stiftung.

First, five photographs produced in collaboration with the artist’s daughter on the road from her childhood home to that of the perpetrator. Then, meticulously cut out family photos. And finally, a fictive scenario between a deceased grandfather and an artist looking for answers.

Mika Sperling, ’Passage’ 2022 Artist-in-Residence. During her stay, Mika continues working on her series ‘Your Will Against Mine’. This work consists of various performances in which Mika addresses her relationship with her daughter. Mika “I want it to reflect upon a desire to look for new paths of parenting without verbal and physical violence, while still haunted by the wounds of my own upbringing.” The performances take place at various locations in nature and are documented as moving images. The ‘Passage’ residency programme is very pleased to provide the necessary framework to enable women artists with children to participate in the residency. In Mother Tongue, Mika Sperling (*1990) examines how origins and culture influence interpersonal relationships based on her personal family history. Language plays a key role in this. Her young daughter and her Vietnamese stepmother are the focus of the photographic examination. Sperling experiments with perspectives, close-ups, and reflecting surfaces and shows the surroundings and personal objects of the individuals portrayed.
Trained in a documentary tradition, Sperling represents a new generation of photo-essayists that takes up historical references and processes them in various mediums and objects so as to engage more intensively with the audience.
